History:
The Margarita, a classic cocktail made with tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur, typically served with salt on the rim of the glass, has a history that is as refreshing as the drink itself, but also shrouded in mystery with multiple origin stories.
One of the earliest stories dates back to the 1930s and credits a wealthy socialite named Margarita Sames with creating the drink. As the story goes, Sames mixed tequila with lime and Cointreau at a party at her cliffside mansion in Acapulco, and the cocktail was a hit. One of the attendees was Tommy Hilton, who liked the drink so much that he added it to the bar menu at his hotel chain.
Another popular account from the 1940s suggests that the Margarita was created by a bartender in honor of Mexican actress Rita de la Rosa. The bartender wanted to impress the beautiful starlet, so he mixed up a special cocktail, which he named after her.
Yet another theory is that the Margarita evolved from a cocktail known as the Daisy. This was a popular mixed drink in the United States during the pre-Prohibition era, and its recipe called for a base spirit plus lemon juice, simple syrup, and a splash of soda. In Spanish, "margarita" is the word for "daisy," leading some to believe that when tequila was swapped into the Daisy cocktail, the Margarita was born.
Regardless of its true origin, the Margarita gained popularity in the United States in the 1950s and '60s, particularly in California, thanks to the emerging wave of American tourists traveling to Mexico. The creation of the frozen Margarita machine in the 1970s by Dallas restaurateur Mariano Martinez gave the cocktail another boost. His machine transformed the Margarita from a relatively simple on-the-rocks cocktail into a slushy, frozen treat, making it even more popular.
Today, the Margarita is one of the most widely known and loved cocktails around the world. It's the most popular tequila-based cocktail in the United States and is routinely a top choice for cocktail drinkers globally. While there are countless variations of the drink today, the original recipe and the iconic presentation with a salted rim remain the standard for this classic cocktail.
